Thermal Energy Storage Tanks: ASME TES Vessels for Data Center & Commercial Cooling

TRIARC Tank manufactures ASME Section VIII, Division 1 & 2 thermal energy storage (TES) tanks for data centers, commercial buildings, and district cooling systems.

A TES tank stores chilled water produced during off-peak hours and releases it later. This shifts the chiller load away from peak demand periods, allows for a smaller installed chiller plant, and provides extended cooling when chillers are offline. Engineered with internal diffusers to maintain strict thermal stratification, our TES tanks separate cold and warm layers to deliver stored capacity at the exact usable supply temperature. Every U-stamped, National Board registered vessel integrates directly into a closed, pressurized chilled water loop and can be installed at grade or indoors.

How TES Capacity Is Sized

Stored capacity is determined by your usable water volume and temperature difference (ΔT). Ton-hours ≈ [Usable gallons × ΔT (°F)] ÷ 1,439

Quick Example:  45,000 gallons at a 16°F ΔT provides ~500 ton-hours—enough to carry a 1,000-ton load for 30 minutes.

A wider ΔT stores significantly more energy in the exact same tank volume. Always calculate your TES sizing alongside your loop design, not as an afterthought.

Why a Pressurized ASME TES Vessel

  • Operates at system pressure and connects straight into existing chilled water piping, eliminating the need for separate pressurization equipment or elevation changes.
  • The pressure-rated design allows for installation anywhere space permits (at grade, indoors, or in mechanical rooms) making it ideal for constrained sites and retrofits.
  • Arrives as a fully finished, factory-tested unit with complete commissioning documentation, bypassing the complexities and risks of on-site construction.
  • Internal diffusers slow the inlet velocity to maintain a thin thermocline, preventing water mixing and maximizing the volume of deliverable cooling capacity.
